The TIG torch body is the main component of a TIG welding torch. It is responsible for carrying the welding current and shielding gas to the weld. The TIG torch body is made up of the following parts:
- Handle: The handle is the part of the torch that the welder holds. It is typically made of a comfortable, ergonomic material.
- Collet: The collet is a metal sleeve that holds the tungsten electrode in place. The collet is sized according to the diameter of the tungsten electrode they hold.
- Gas nozzle: The gas nozzle is a ceramic or metal tube that directs the shielding gas to the weld area. The size of the gas nozzle depends upon the diameter of the electrode, the joint configuration, and the availability of access to the joint by the welder. The inside diameter of the nozzle is preferably at least three times the diameter of the electrode, but there are no hard rules.
- Tungsten electrode: The tungsten electrode is the part of the torch that actually melts and creates the weld. Tungsten is a very hard metal that can withstand high temperatures, making it ideal for TIG welding.
- Cooling system: The cooling system is used to cool the torch body and tungsten electrode. There are two main types of cooling systems: air-cooled and water-cooled. Air-cooled torches are less expensive, but they are not as effective at cooling the torch body and electrode. Water-cooled torches are more expensive, but they provide better cooling and can be used for more demanding welding applications.
